Gerald D. 'Pete' McCandless
Gerald D. “Pete” McCandless, 87, of Mars passed away Wednesday morning at the Arbors of Valencia Woods.
Born in Jackson Township on Aug. 21, 1927, he was the son of the late Harold and Olive Lutz McCandless.
Pete was a glazier for Glaziers Local 751, working at PPG Industries in Pittsburgh.
He was a member of the Old Union Presbyterian Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a life member of the Mars VFW Post 7505, a 58-year member of the Evans City American Legion Post 219, and a 56-year member of the John E. Mair Lodge 729 F&AM.
Surviving are his two daughters, Paula Condon and her husband, David, and Robin Kennedy and her husband, Brian, both of Mars; his daughter-in-law, Veronica McCandless of Shaler Township; his grandchildren, Ryan McCandless and his wife, Jolene, Jason McCandless and his wife, Nicole, Heather Hieserich and her husband, Tim, Krista Boyd and her husband, Klavin, Matthew Kennedy and his wife, Leandra, and Melissa Howells and her husband, Russ; his 14 great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Betty Luntz and her husband, Lee, of Houston, Texas, and Lois Nye of Fombell; his brother, Harold Richard McCandless of Denton, Texas; his special friend, Ruth Kennedy Jones of Mars, and his nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn “Pooch” Davidson McCandless, who he married on June 3, 1948, and who died on Jan. 8, 2004; his son, Paul D. McCandless, and his brother, Howard McCandless.
McCandless — Friends of Gerald D. “Pete” McCandless, who died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Old Union Church, 200 Union Church Road, Mars, with the Rev. Peter deVries, pastor, officiating. A luncheon will follow.
