Harrisville man dies after being hit by Jeep
HARRISVILLE — An elderly borough man out for his usual early morning walk Tuesday was struck and killed while crossing Route 58, authorities said.
Paul V. Emmett Jr., 80, died of injuries at an Ohio hospital where he was flown after the accident shortly before 5:30 a.m.
State police said Emmett was hit not far from his home in the 200 block of West Prairie Street.
“His son told us (Emmett) goes out for a morning walk at the same time every day,” said police Lt. Eric Hermick. “He was following the normal route he took.”
Emmett was crossing Route 58 from north to south when he was hit in the eastbound lane by a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, The driver, Curtis J. McConnell, 27, of Slippery Rock, was unable to avoid the accident.
“Speed was not a factor,” Hermick said.
No charges are filed in the accident.
Emmett, who was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans, was hit at the intersection of South McDonald Street near the Sheetz convenience store.
Police said there is limited lighting in the area.
“It was almost pitch black out,” Hermick said.
The impact pushed Emmett onto the hood of the Jeep. Neither McConnell nor the 20-year-old Harrisville woman riding in the vehicle was hurt.
A Superior Ambulance crew tended to him before a medical helicopter flew him to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
He was pronounced dead at 11:01 a.m., according to the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
