Tyler was born in Natrona Heights on July 6, 1984. He was the son of Darlene R. Barnett Smith of Fawn Township and the late Kenneth L. Smith.

He also attended Edinboro University where he was a resident assistant and a student coordinator from 2004 to 2008. He received a bachelor's degree in political science, graduating with honors.

Following his graduation, he worked for a subsidiary of The GameFly Co. as a Web administrator.

Tyler was a huge science-fiction fan. He considered himself an avid Trekkie, watching all of the Star Trek adventures. Through the Make-A-Wish program, Tyler flew to California to be involved with the making of the 30th anniversary of “Star Trek,” meeting many of the original casts. He also was a fan of the Star Wars Saga.
