Ludwig 'Lew' Freiters

Ludwig “Lew” Freiters, 86, of Petrolia passed away peacefully Wednesday at his home after a brief illness.

Born on the Ward Farm in Fairview Township on May 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Henry and Anna Otto Freiters.

He married Virgina Slater Freiters on June 4, 1949, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2012.

He attended the old Chriswell School before starting a 41-year career as a machine operator at Koppers from 1947 until he retired in 1988.

He was a member of the Petrolia Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department and an avid member of the Butler County Horseshoe League. He was an avid sportsman who was still hunting until last year and was always a die-hard Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Freiters of Petrolia; his son, Barry (Sherri) Freiters of Parker; his three brothers, Frederick “Fritz” (Donna) Freiters of Chicora, Arnold “Chub” Freiters of Karns City and Charles “Charlie” (Jane) Freiters of Chicora; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Lew was preceded in death by his sister, Barb McCollough; his infant sister, Bertha; and his brother, Henry (Heiny) Freiters.

Freiters— The friends of Ludwig “Lew” Freiters, who passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, 201 Main St., Eau Claire.Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday from the funeral home.
