2 charged in boat theft at Moraine State Park
MUDDY CREEK TWP — Two people were arrested Friday and accused of stealing a boat from Moraine State Park.
Jeffrey Mansfield, 35, and Rachelle Kane, 32, were arrested in their New Castle home, according to Jake Weiland, the park’s assistant manager.
State police earlier this week released a surveillance photograph showing the two allegedly stealing a 16-foot 2006 Polarcraft boat and Lippert boat trailer on Sept. 21 from the Davis Hollow Marina at Lake Arthur.
Weilands said the boat was not recovered.
“It was disposed of, unfortunately,” Weiland said. “It was turned into scrap.”
Both Mansfield and Kane are facing two felony counts of theft by unlawful taking, according to court documents.
They were taken to Butler County Prison on Friday afternoon and were released later that night after posting bail.
Mansfield was released on $50,000 bail while Kane was released on $5,000.
The value of the boat and trailer were estimated at $7,500 by Travelers Insurance, which offered a $500 reward for information on the case.
Weiland said a caller contacted Travelers Insurance and identified Mansfield, whose face was shown in the photograph.
Weiland did not comment on the status of the reward offered.
Officers from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources made the arrest with the assistance of the State Police Auto Theft Task Force.
The case marked the second boat theft of the year at the park.
Another boat, a 2009 Bass Tracker worth about $13,000, was stolen between Aug. 6 and Sept. 6, but it was recovered.
Weiland said Mansfield and Kane are not suspects in that case, and DCNR is still investigating it.
Neither boat stolen was properly secured.
