Obituaries show wide range of lives

Obituaries published daily in the Butler Eagle usually list the accomplishments and interests of those who died.

When taken as a whole, these 2,000 obituaries reveal a wide range of Butler County residents who led interesting lives and who did a great deal.

Here are some of the people who died in 2014 and the unique contributions they made to their communities.

Another list of late county residents will be published Friday.

Dana J. McCoyDana J. McCoy of Sarver died Feb. 7.She traveled on mission trips to Burkina Faso, West Africa, Chaing Mae, Thailand and Bucharest, Romania.With her husband and three daughters, she was musical director of their family ministry known as “The Mountaintop Experience.” For several years the family traveled throughout Western Pennsylvania and beyond, sharing God’s love with music and drama.She also sang with church choirs, directed the Saxonburg Easter Choir for several years and was vocal director of two musicals at Knoch High School.

William W. Hazlett William W. Hazlett, 69, of Buffalo Township died March 4.His greatest passion was trapshooting. He won numerous championships and titles from various states from 1978 to 2013. His greatest accomplishment was winning the Grand American Handicap Championship in 1980, which to a trap shooter is equivalent to the Super Bowl.One of his dreams was to win the Pennsylvania State Doubles Championship, which he did in 2012.

Ronald L. Larimore Ronald L. Larimore, 67, of Emlenton died March 9.He was a life member of the Emlenton Volunteer Fire Department and began his career as a firefighter at the age of 6 months as the fire department’s mascot. He later served the fire department as a member of the board, and he was assistant and deputy fire chief for many years.He was a longtime member of the board of the Emlenton Cemetery Co. and, at the time of his death, Ron was president of the board. Ron had been honored as Emlenton’s Citizen of the Year by the Emlenton Area Chamber of Commerce.He had been active in the Boy Scouts. He was deputy tax collector for Emlenton and had been the secretary of Emlenton Borough Council and had been a member of borough council.He participated in Emlenton Civic Club’s variety show, “Show Boat,” for many years.

Enrico “Rick” Davanzati Enrico S. “Rick” Davanzati, 82, of Butler died March 29.He was one of the two founders of the Butler Road Race.In 1969, Rick received the Carnegie Hero Award for saving Harry Leyland from a perilous fall on Nov. 20, 1968.

Alan P. Romatowski Alan P. Romatowski, 62, of Butler died April 6.Alan was a pilot for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) and US Airways.On his 56th birthday, Alan was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s and became an advocate for Alzheimer’s research. He was on the National Alzheimer’s Association Early-Stage Advisory Board, and was board member of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.He met with congressmen in Washington, D.C., spoke before the PA Committee on Aging in Harrisburg and advocated for Alzheimer’s awareness and research.

Helga N. NallathambiHelga N. Nallathambi, M.D., 84, of Butler died May 18.She graduated from Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, in 1960. She worked 23 years as a pathologist at Bashline and the Grove City Medical Center, retiring in 2000.She served at Mission Hospital in Kachwa, India. She was a teaching fellow at Children’s Hospital in London.Along with her husband, in 2000, she founded the Indo-American Home for Children, which is supported by many residents of Butler County. It provides food, clothing, education, and Christian nurturing to orphaned and semi-orphaned children in India.

John J. Riley IIIJohn J. Riley III, 76, of Renfrew died June 9.He was active in the Zelienople and Harmony communities. He was the president of the Merchant Association for two years, as well as president of the Zelienople-Harmony Chamber of Commerce for two years.John was one of the founders of the Southwest YMCA, where he served as board president and was also on the Butler YMCA board for several years.He also served on the Civil Service Commission for 20 years, as well as the Zelienople Library Board.

William W. HendersonWilliam W. “Bill” Henderson, 87, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Zelienople, died June 4.Bill served as a trustee for the Butler YMCA and was on the board of managers as well as the building committee of the Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA. He was the former president and board member on the Southwest Butler County School Board for 16 years and was also instrumental in the formation of the local Junior Achievement program.

Lewis Conrad MarraLewis Conrad Marra, 90, of Butler died June 12.He play the guitar and harmonica and played in a round-and-square dance band with his father. He studied voice, music, and the Italian, French and Russian languages.He served on the Butler Area Sewer Authority for 20 years and the Armco Credit Union for 33 years. He was a member of the Butler Township zoning hearing board, the Butler Township planning commission, the Butler Symphony Board and was in charge of the Butler Area Junior Achievement program.He performed in countless Butler Musical Theatre Guild shows, as the troubadour in the Boars Head Festival, and as a soloist in churches and for weddings across the United States. He performed for many functions of the Pittsburgh Opera and was a member of the Opera Production Committee.

Jessica Marie Forsythe Jessica Marie Forsythe, 65, of Butler died June 22.She worked for Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann from 1975 to 1997. In 1997, she and her husband, Richard Forsythe, founded 4-Most Group Inc. Architects, where Jessica was president.She was a member of the board at Butler County Community College and at Community Care Connections. She was a former board member of the Community Health Clinic of Butler County, the YMCA of Butler and the Butler Chamber of Commerce Community Champions. She also sponsored the SEEDS for Tomorrow Scholarship through Butler County Vocational-Technical School.
