Edgar C. Pickard
Edgar C. Pickard, 87, of Valparaiso, Ind., passed away Tuesday surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee Pickard; his daughters, Sue (Steve) VanDewater and Terri (Tom) Mueller; his grandchildren, John (Lindsay) Mueller and Melissa (Matt) Dowling; and his two great-grandchildren, Will and Maggie Dowling.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Eva Pickard.
Ed was born May 17, 1927, in Karns City and attended Mercersburg Academy, the University of Pittsburgh and Cornell University.
Ed served in the South Pacific during World War II as a Navy radar technician.
He married Norma Lee Maurhoff on May 30, 1950, in Chicora.
Ed was employed by U.S. Steel Corp. and was division superintendent of the Homestead Works, Homestead. He served as an adviser to Spain's U.S. Steel Division, was assistant general superintendent of Gary Works and was head of the Sheet and Tin Division of Gary Works, Gary, Ind.
After his retirement from U.S. Steel, he founded Varied Products in Valparaiso, Ind., a steel fabricating company. He was issued five U.S. patents, three for the harness racing industry and two for the steel industry.
Ed's hobbies included horse racing, hunting and flying. He was an avid golfer, having been a member of the Butler and Ridgeview country clubs of Pennsylvania and the Valparaiso Country Club. His invention of a variable balance bike (sulky) now is in the Harness Racing Museum in Goshen, N.Y.
He was also a member of the Petrolia Chapter of the Masons.
