Mary Owens

Mary Virginia Owens, 82, of Butler passed away at 2:25 p.m. Friday at the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1932, in Norwich, N.Y., to the late James A. Haynes and Grace E. Transue Haynes.

Mrs. Owens was a 1950 graduate of Norwich High School, Norwich, N.Y., then went on to Albany Business College, earning an executive secretarial degree. Before her marriage, she worked as a secretary to the president of Bennett-Ireland Inc. in Norwich, N.Y. Most recently, she worked as a secretary at the YWCA in Butler for many years, from where she retired.

Mrs. Owens was a member of the St. Peter's Anglican Church, the Intermediate League of Butler, the Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, playing bridge, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Owens is survived by her son, Joseph P. Owens Jr. of Butler; her two daughters, Sarah O. Jones and her husband, Barry, of Media and Elizabeth A. Hannum and her husband, Elliott A. Jr., of Richboro; her two grandchildren, Jack E. Hannum and Meghan E. Hannum; her brother, James A. Haynes of Utica, N.Y., and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Paul Owens, who she married on Aug. 21, 1955, and who passed away on Jan. 11, 2010; her four sisters, Ellen Blenis, Alice Hauer, Grace Hendricks, and Carolyn Zaharis, and her stepmother, Janet Haynes.

Owens— There will be no public visitation for Mary Virginia Owens, who passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2014.A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Peter's Anglican Church, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. Andrew DeFusco officiating.Arrangements are by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Butler.In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Road, Suite 320, Wexford, PA 15090, to the Butler Public Library, 218 N.
