Man charged for not paying for stays at resorts
PENN TWP — A con man who posed as a heart surgeon managed to eat and play round after round of golf for nearly a week at Conleys Resort, police said.
The alleged impersonator at checkout time signed for his $1,213 tab — which he billed to Butler Memorial Hospital.
But that suspected summer con job was not the first for 41-year-old Jeffrey Paul Cochran of Scottville. Mich. Authorities said, it was at least the third time he‘s pulled the same ruse.
Two months before visiting Conley’s, Cochran racked up a $16,000 bill at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Fayette County, according to court documents.
He also allegedly did not pay a hotel in Nebraska for more than $3,000 in lodging.
District Judge Sue Haggerty on Friday arraigned Cochran on charges stemming from the suspected confidence game in Penn Township.
Meanwhile, Cochran remains in the Fayette County Jail, where’s he’s facing similar charges.
“It amazed me that he was able to do it for as long as he did,” said Penn Township Patrolman Jack Ripper. “But it eventually caught up to him.”
Police said Cochran stayed for free at Conley Resort on Route 8 from July 9 to 14. He pretended to be a doctor interviewing for the job of head of the cardiac unit at Butler Memorial.
Ripper, the investigating officer, said he did not know why the suspect picked Conley’s.
State police in Uniontown on July 24 got an arrest warrant for him. The warrant was for charges that he stayed at a $500-a-night room at the Nemacolin Woodlands pretending to be a heart surgeon and golf pro.
Police arrested Cochran in Michigan on Nov. 12 after he left from his mother’s funeral.
He was extradited to Fayette County, where he’s been locked up since Thanksgiving Day.
He is charged here with forgery, a felony, and theft by deception, theft of services, false impersonation and identity theft.
