Samuel Smith
Samuel Brown Smith, 83, of the Village of Turkey City, Route 338, Emlenton, passed away early Friday morning at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Samuel was born in Cowansville on April 22, 1931. He was the son of Albert and Viola Brown Smith.
Sam retired from the maintenance department at Clarion Hospital.
He enjoyed watching football and was an avid Steelers fan. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening.
Sam was a talented guitarist. Following retirement, he played guitar in his bands, Country Star and Keystone, and enjoyed playing and singing for the residents of the area's nursing homes.
Sam was a dedicated family man and enjoyed the company of his family. As a boy, Sam attended the Sherrett School. He often recalled the good memories of his youth while growing up with his siblings.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Stella Pearl McElroy Smith, who he married in Beaver on Nov. 16, 1951.
Also surviving are two sons, Harry Walter McElroy Sr. of Ford City and Samuel McElroy of Turkey City; five daughters, Barbara Clement and her husband, John, of Springfield, Ill., Bonnie Vaughn and her husband, Glenn, of Knox, Jayne Porter of Washington, Pa., Sandra Allen and her husband, Bill, of Cochranton and Laura Jetter of Knox; 16 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 50 great-great-grandchildren. One brother survives, Omer R. Smith and his wife, Mabel, of Rimersburg; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Samuel B. Jr.; one daughter, Nellie May; seven brothers, Carl, David, Pat, Alfred, George, Mike and Arnie; two sisters, Florence Custer and Clara Ellen Jane “Sis” Toy; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
SMITH — Friends of Samuel Brown Smith, who died Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, will be received at the Hile Funeral Home, 1204 Kerr Ave. Emlenton, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. David S. Coul, pastor of the Knox United Methodist Church, officiating.
