Bill delays release of death informationHARRISBURG — Coroners will have to wait for at least three days to announce the name of a dead person or the cause and manner of their death if they haven’t been able to notify the next of kin, under a measure that just passed the state House.State representatives voted unanimously Monday for the bill that was inspired by the death last year from a heart tumor of a Western Pennsylvania high school football player.The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association opposes the bill because it would prevent the public from promptly learning basic information about deaths the coroner is investigating, a spokesman said.The bill’s delays in public notice don’t apply if the information’s release would help to avert a public health emergency, or help to identify an unknown decedent.
Vote renames exit after slain trooperHARRISBURG — Pennsylvania state senators are moving to rename an Interstate 84 exit for the Pennsylvania State Police trooper who was killed in an ambush at a nearby barracks.The Senate voted unanimously Monday to rename the Blooming Grove exit in Pike County for Cpl. Bryon Dickson. The bill now goes to the House.The 38-year-old Dickson was killed Sept. 12 outside the Blooming Grove barracks. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and left behind a wife and two young sons.The alleged shooter, Eric Frein, was caught after a 48-day manhunt in the Pocono Mountains and is charged with first-degree murder.
Man seen with rifle near school jailedPITTSBURGH — A homeless man allegedly spotted with a rifle near a school has been jailed on charges including having a weapon on school property.Online court records show Quantai Raines, 18, was jailed after his arraignment Monday.Aliquippa School District Superintendent David Wytiaz said the suspect was arrested about 12:30 p.m. Monday.Wytiaz said Aliquippa Junior/Senior High School and an elementary school about two miles away were locked down after the incident was reported.
