Man jailed again 1 day after release
SAXONBURG — A day after being released from jail in one county, a suspected burglar ended up behind bars again — this time in Butler County Prison.
Kevin J. Bell, 41, of Harrison Township, Allegheny County, turned himself in to authorities Monday on charges he broke into a house in Jefferson Township earlier this month.
Just Friday, Bell was arrested on charges he broke into two homes in West Deer Township, Allegheny County. In one of those burglaries, he was confronted and chased away by a gun-packing homeowner, authorities said.
State police in Butler allege Bell on April 9 or 10 busted into a house — owned by his aunt — on the 600 block of Dinnerbell Road after smashing the front door glass with a rock.
The homeowner’s son April 10 discovered the break-in at his mother’s house, which had been ransacked. Stolen was $2,212 in currency, according to court documents.
While troopers were investigating the burglary, they learned that Bell had been arrested Friday in Harrison Township for driving his father’s pickup truck without permission.
But the suspect was allegedly in a talking mood and admitting to other crimes, including the Jefferson Township break-in and two more recent burglaries in West Deer, documents said,
West Deer police suspect Bell about 9 p.m. Thursday busted out a window to get inside a house in the 2000 block of Saxonburg Boulevard. A woman at the home screamed and the suspect beat a hasty retreat.
However, only minutes later and just two houses away, police said, Bell targeted another home. But his luck didn’t change.
This time, police said, the homeowner had a gun.
Investigators believe the defendant got into the house by way of an unlocked back door. He apparently was unaware that the couple was home, watching television.
After catching the intruder holding his money clip and rifling through his wife’s purse, the homeowner got his handgun. Bell got going.
The burglar ran off, apparently leaving his father’s pickup truck parked nearby. Police in neighboring Harrison Township found the truck, which helped connect Bell to both West Deer burglaries, authorities said.
He admitted to those break-ins as well as the one in Butler County, police said.
Bell told investigators that he knew his aunt was not home when he broke in, documents said. He said he grabbed all the money he could find. He used the stolen loot to buy drugs.
Bell was first arraigned on burglary and other charges stemming from the West Deer break-ins. He was placed in the Allegheny County Jail on Friday and released Sunday after posting $20,000 bail.
He voluntarily appeared Monday at District Judge Sue Haggerty’s office in Saxonburg, where he was arraigned for breaking into his aunt’s house.
He is charged in the case with burglary, trespass, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Following arraignment, he was placed in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.
