Bishop asks Catholics to aid relief in Nepal

PITTSBURGH — At weekend Masses on May 9 and 10, every parish in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will have a special collection for the emergency relief efforts in Nepal coordinated with Catholic Relief Services working in partnership with Caritas Nepal.

In a letter to all be read in all parishes this weekend, Bishop David Zubik said, “We mourn the loss of life and the terrible suffering of our brothers and sisters in Nepal. They desperately need our help and we must respond. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has called for international aid, and we the bishops of the United States are answering his plea.”

Nepal was devastated by an earthquake Saturday, with the death toll rising to more than 4,600 people.

All of the funds collected will go to emergency needs including water, shelter, medical care and sanitation.

People also are able to donate online at
