Shoplifting charges filed
CRANBERRY TWP — Two suspected repeat shoplifters are jailed following their arrests last week on similar unrelated crimes at the same Route 19 store in the township.
Christopher G. Olexa, 29, of Monessen, Westmoreland County, and Stephen D. Wise, 31, of New Brighton, Beaver County, are both charged with felony counts of retail theft.
Cranberry police said Olexa was caught about 1 p.m. Thursday at Walmart allegedly concealing a box of teeth whitening strips and a video game controller. The merchandise is valued at $109.93.
Olexa has two prior convictions for shoplifting, according to court documents.
While normally a summary or misdemeanor offense, retail theft is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property’s value when a defendant has at least two prior arrests for the same crime.
The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 7 years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned the suspect, who was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.
Police on Thursday also nabbed Wise on an arrest warrant stemming from a suspected Nov. 14 shoplifting incident at Walmart.
He is accused of stealing $434 worth of Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming controllers. Police believe another man, who they have not identified, aided the defendant in the alleged crime. Both men managed to get away with the merchandise.
Store surveillance video helped police identify Wise, who has three prior shoplifting convictions, court documents said. Because of his criminal record, police said, the suspect in June 2014 was barred from all Walmart stores.
Stoughton arraigned Wise on felony charges of retail theft, conspiracy to commit retail theft, receiving stolen property and trespass. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.
