Richard 'Dick' Lee McCandless
Richard “Dick” Lee McCandless, 67, of Butler passed away at 7:10 a.m. Thursday at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.
Dick was born on May 21, 1947, in Slippery Rock Borough, Butler County, to Doris Kelly McCandless and the late Joseph Richard McCandless.
He married Carolyn Anna Folwarczny on June 6, 1981.
He was a graduate of Slippery Rock High School and Slippery Rock State College, now called Slippery Rock University.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran and had served in Vietnam. He was inducted in 1966 and honorably discharged in 1972.
His grandfather, Gus Eli Kelly, was the original police chief of Slippery Rock.
Dick retired as a pharmacy tech. His career led him to work at the Aspinwall Hospital for more than 20 years, later the VA Hospital in Oakland and finally with the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Butler until his retirement.
He was a member of the Stanley Snyder VFW Post 7465 in Springfield Township, Mercer County.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn at home; his daughter, Lori McCandless Bowser of Anthem, Ariz.; his mother, Doris “Sue” M. Kelly Soldo of Bethel Park; his three sisters, Sharon Mikrut of Bethel Park, Debra Palmer and her husband, Larry, of Slippery Rock and Donna Palmer and her husband, Gary, of Slippery Rock; his two brothers, William Soldo of Slippery Rock and John Soldo of Bethel Park; his stepdaughter, Josie Ashe and her husband, William, of Kittanning; his stepson, Alex White of Butler; his two granddaughters, Haley and Brooklyn Bowser; his two stepgrandchildren, Donovan and Miranda Ashe; his two half-brothers, Rick McCandless and his wife, Bonnie, of Boyers and Rod McCandless and his wife, Ann Marie, of Boyers; and his three half-sisters, Pamela and her husband, Nick McCarl, of Boyers, Christine and her husband, Joe DeMatteis, of Boyers and Cindy and her husband, Paul Dallos, of Chesapeake, Va.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gus Eli Kelly and Clara I. Kelly; his father; and his stepfather, Peter Soldo.
McCandless— The family of Richard “Dick” Lee McCandless, who passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. James Lewis of Butler presiding. Interment will be in West Liberty Cemetery.
