Flames damage home

No one is injured in Zelienople fire

ZELIENOPLE — No one was injured in a fire Tuesday morning that was believed to have been sparked by a crew installing an air conditioning unit.

Several fire departments were summoned to 310 W. New Castle St. about 8:30 a.m. where smoke was coming from the roof. Traffic was quickly shut down in both directions.

Zelienople Fire Chief Rob Reeb said workers with Homer Nine and Sons were drilling a hole in the attic for the installation of an air conditioner when the fire started and eventually spread. The fire was contained to the second floor and attic, he said.

A spokesman with Homer Nine said crews were at the house Tuesday but did not have any information regarding the fire.

Firefighters were on scene for several hours to douse the fire and vent the attic. Reeb estimated damage at $12,000 to $15,000.

Assisting Zelienople were Harmony, Cranberry, Evans City, Franklin, New Sewickley and Marshall volunteer fire departments.

Reeb said he called for the additional departments due to the time of the fire, and he was pleased to see strong turnout.
