Former, current lawmakers plead guilty in sting case

HARRISBURG — One current and one former Democratic state lawmaker from Philadelphia have pleaded guilty today to conflict of interest and received probation for their contacts with a lobbyist who secretly recorded their exchanges.

Former state Rep. Harold James pleaded guilty to a single count of conflict of interest today and was sentenced to 12 months of probation.

His plea came shortly after a similar plea by Rep. Ron Waters to nine counts of conflict of interest. Waters is being ordered to spend 23 months on probation.

Waters is required to resign from the House, where he’s served since 1999.

The charges are among those filed by Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams after state Attorney General Kathleen Kane declined to pursue an investigation built on secret recordings by lobbyist Tyron Ali.
