Man dies when tree branch falls on mobile home
WORTH TWP — A man died Friday night after a tree branch fell through his mobile home.
Firefighters and medical technicians with Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team were called to the home on West Park Road about 5:30 p.m., Chief Ken Taggart said.
Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr said the 31-year-old man died instantly of head injuries. An autopsy was done Saturday morning.
Barr said Saturday morning he did not release the man’s name because he was waiting to speak with the family.
Barr said a young child was in the home at the time of the incident, but was not injured.
A neighbor said that the trailer is in the 900 block of West Park Road and winds brought down tree branches around the area.
The branch of the tree that fell on the trailer was about 2-feet around, Taggart said.
“It was a good-sized tree,” he said.
Responders did not remove the tree from the trailer.
The call was one of many that fire departments across the county responded to Friday night. Butler County Emergency Services received more than 70 reports of fallen utility wires and trees across road, according to dispatch reports.
“It was widespread through the whole county,” said Steve Bicehouse, director of emergency services. “I don’t think there was a (fire) department that didn’t get hit.”
Pat Herald, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said a ban of strong storms passed over Western Pennsylvania throughout the evening.
“It looks like from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. it was over Butler County,” Herald said Saturday morning.
Reports indicated winds reached 55 mph in the county, Herald said, adding the surrounding counties received similar figures.
