Ruth A.M. Boughton
Ruth A.M. Boughton, 92, of St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars, formerly of Butler, died Tuesday afternoon at St. John's.
Ruth was born in Baltimore, Md., on June 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Rev. Henry and Elsie Eberle. Ruth married David Boughton on Feb. 16, 1974, on Staten Island, N.Y. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1990.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Eberle, and an infant brother.
She is survived by many loving cousins, both locally and around the country.
Ruth attained her degree in nursing at South Baltimore General Hospital in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a captain in the Nursing Corps from 1944 to 1946. She was held briefly as a prisoner of war by the Germans during her time in Europe.
After her discharge from the Army, she spent 10 years as a missionary and nurse in India. Upon her return to the United States, she earned certification in gerontology and worked for Eager Lutheran Hospital in Brookline, N.Y., until she retired in 1985 and moved with her husband to Butler.
She was an active volunteer for 22 years at St. John Specialty Care Center until September 2009 and was devoted to God and caring for others.
She was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Connoquenessing, president of the American Lutheran Church Women and served on many committees and boards involving the Lutheran Church.
