Janet Hofer

Janet Maxine Hofer, 85, of Butler passed away Wednesday after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 7, 1929, in Butler, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Mary E. Masters. Janet married Robert C. Hofer on Nov. 12, 1951.

She graduated from Butler High School in 1947 and formerly worked at Mellon Bank and the Dance Connection.

She belonged to the St. Paul Catholic Church where she assisted in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program. As a previous member, she taught CCD classes at the St. Conrad Catholic Church, now the St. Fidelis Parish, in Meridian.

As an active 50-year member of the GFWC Intermediate League, Janet particularly enjoyed her role as business manager for its annual antiques show and sale fundraiser. Over the years, Janet volunteered for the Meridian kindergarten program, the March of Dimes and the Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with the “Wednesday Bridge Girls,” entertaining family and friends, cooking, antiquing, gardening, traveling, theater and symphony productions.

Surviving are her husband, Robert C. Hofer; one son, Bradley Hofer; two daughters, Leslie Hofer of Conneaut Lake and Kristin Bearer and her husband, Thomas; two granddaughters, Caitlin Sub and her husband, Travis, and Erin Gildea of Pittsburgh; one great-granddaughter, Reegan Sub; one brother, Robert Masters; and two nieces and their families.

Janet was preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Sally Masters and Lenore Hofer.

Janet will be lovingly remembered as a devoted and hardworking wife, mother, friend and member of the community. She leaves us with an inspirational legacy of courage, determination and faith in the face of adversity.

HOFER — Friends of Janet Maxine Hofer, who died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. The Rev. Harry Bielewicz, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut.

St. Paul’s Catholic Women and Christian Mothers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church to recite the rosary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Catholic Church in Butler or to the American Cancer Society/Multiple Myeloma.
