Gene Marl Karenbauer, 66, of Butler passed away at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 16, 1948, on the family farm in Chicora to the late James Karenbauer and Hazel (Mottern) Karenbauer.

Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the 1st Calvary Division as a sergeant during the Vietnam War.

After returning from the war, he worked construction. Gene then worked at Armco/AK Steel, retiring in March 2003 with 35 years of service. Following retirement, he worked at Hovis Auto Body.

He was a member of the East Butler Fire Hall, the VFW Butler 249 and was a former member of the Oneida Bow hunters and a former Mason. Gene enjoyed archery and rifle hunting, gardening, casino trips and especially his beloved grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra (Clark) Karenbauer, who he married Sept. 5, 1970; one son, Jason Karenbauer and his wife, Heather of Mercer, Pa.; two daughters, Amber Tressler and her husband, Dan, of Butler and Ashley Bohler and her husband, James, of Baden, Pa.; five grandchildren, Madison Tressler, Gavin Tressler, Alyse Karenbauer, Chase Karenbauer and Peyton Bohler; his stepmother, Rose Karenbauer; one brother, Brad Karenbauer of Butler; one sister, Jana Becker of Glennallen of Alaska; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Karenbauer; and two sisters, Raylene Rekich and Renae Strobel.

KARENBAUER — Friends of Gene Marl Karenbauer, who died Friday, July 17, 2015, will be received 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. Private funeral services and burial will be Tuesday at the North Butler Cemetery, Oakland Township.Full military honors will be accorded by officers and members of the American Legion Post 117 Butler, the American Legion Post 778 Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 of Butler.Memorials are suggested to the VFW-Veterans of Foreign Wars USA, 429 W Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
