Lewis Calvin Hathaway, 89, of Portersville passed away at 7:55 a.m. Sunday at VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler following an extended illness.

Lewis was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Dink, W.Va., to Earl James Hathaway and Catherine Lambey Hathaway. Lewis married Helen Louise Ongley on March 24, 1951.

He operated Hathaway Timber Business for over 40 years in the Titusville area and later in the Butler and New Castle areas. Following his retirement, he went to work for the McClymonds Trucking Co. in Portersville for seven years as night watchman, retiring at the age of 83.

Lewis attended The Presbyterian Church of Portersville.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II as a gunner's mate on the USS SC 1020 and USS SC 1298. He was present at the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and other battles and received the Pacific Theater Ribbon (2 stars), the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon.

He loved his family and spending time with them. He was proud of his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Lewis's hobbies included hunting, fishing, bowling, remodeling, cooking and baking. “He was an outdoors man.”

He was a voracious reader and one year decided to track the number of books he read in a year. That year he read 196 books. His favorite book was “The Last of the Breed” by Louis L'Amour. His wife Helen said, “He could make a pie as good or better than his mother-in-law.”

Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Hathaway of Portersville; three daughters, Beverly E. Wolfe of Portersville; Connie L. Schmoll of Mars, and Linda L. and her husband, Kevin Johnson of Portersville; four grandchildren, Angela C. Book Krysa, Jessica C. Book, Dawn E. Book-Squire and Jody S. Johnson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Thelma Short, Elsie Liles, Irene Chickering and Adeline Bevel; two brothers, Abe L. and Edward A. Hathaway; two grandchildren, Joshua S. Wolfe and infant granddaughter, Christine L. Book.

HATHAWAY — Private funeral services will be observed for Lewis Calvin Hathaway, who died Sunday, July 19, 2015, at a later time convenient for the family at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. John Hathaway, nephew of Lewis and retired pastor of the Grace Wesleyan Church of Culloden, W.Va., presiding.Interment will be at the Unity Baptist Cemetery in Harlansburg.Memorial contributions may be given to VNA Inpatient Hospice, 115 Technology Dr. Butler, PA 16001.
