Freeport hires Leechburg super
BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School Board on Wednesday night hired Ian Magness as its new superintendent.
He is the superintendent of Leechburg School District in Armstrong County and has held several administrative positions in the region.
The board approved a five-year contract with Magness with an initial salary of $139,000. He will start Nov. 1 or sooner if possible.
Before Leechburg, he was the assistant superintendent at Blairsville-Saltsburg School District, principal at Apollo-Ridge School District and principal of Mars Centennial School in Mars School District when it first opened in 2007.
He will take over at Freeport for program director Larry Robb, who has been the district’s acting superintendent since June when Chris DeVivo resigned. DeVivo left to become the superintendent of Armstrong School District.
School Board President Daniel Lucovich said of Magness, “We think he seems to fit the type of superintendent we want here at Freeport. He has a lot of talent, a lot of energy, and he has a lot of experience he brings to the table.”
Magness said this morning in an e-mail, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the students, families, teachers, and staff of the Freeport School District. These are certainly exciting times for the district, and I am blessed to join their great team.”
The district received about 15 applications for the position.
