Fire breaks out at Old Stone House cooking demo
BRADY TWP — A cooking demonstration at the Old Stone House on Saturday got a little too heated.
That caused a small fire to break out.
The fire started about 4:45 p.m. at the museum, which is run by Slippery Rock University. During an event sponsored by SRU’s history department, a chef was cooking in the fireplace when the flames from the cooking ignited something in the chimney.
“It started in the chimney and went to the structure of the house,” Chief Ken Taggart of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company said this morning.
By the time firefighters arrived, everyone who was at the event had evacuated the building, which was built in 1822.
Taggart said there were concerns about the fire spreading due to old, dry wood in the structure.
“It could have went bad quickly,” Taggart said.
He said the damage appeared to be minor.
Rita Abent, an SRU spokesman, said this morning that the damage appears to be smoke related.
“A full assessment will be made through our health and safety department,” Abent said in an e-mail.
