Domenic Gentile, former Saxonburg Hotel owner

Domenic “Roomie” Gentile, 96, of Saxonburg passed away peacefully Monday at Canterbury Place, Pittsburgh.

He was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Johnetta, Pa., the son of the late John and Rosa (Delmauro) Gentile. He spent most of his life in Saxonburg.

Domenic was a World War II Navy veteran.

He and his wife Jean acquired the Hotel Saxonburg in 1958. He had a special affection for the extended family of co-workers who loyally served the restaurant patrons. The restaurant was in his family for over 50 years, continuing to serve the community as a town landmark since 1832.

Domenic was a kind and pleasant man with style and wit, who will be missed. He was a Catholic and a member of the Oregon Hunting and Fishing Club, Brackenridge, and a 1937 graduate of Arnold High School. Domenic played on the only Arnold High School football team that ever beat New Kensington High School.

He was the beloved husband of the love of his life, the late Jean (Carlacini) Gentile; the proud father of two sons, the late Alfred “Fred” Gentile and Gary (Jean Malinic) Gentile; the grandfather of Amy, Cara (Scott Howell), Liza, Jordan and Ben; the great grandfather of the Braden Stemley; the father-in-law of Carolyn Gentile; the brother of the late Carl, Casimir and Stephen; the uncle to many nieces and nephews; and the beloved friend of Elaine Henry.
