Driver leads police on chase through city
A 10-time suspended driver is accused of leading Butler police on a chase through the city last week.
The suspect, 45-year-old Arthur R. Vanscoy of Clearfield Township, remains in the Butler County Prison on $2,500 bail.
Police said they initially spotted the suspect's pickup truck with an expired inspection sticker at South Chestnut and West Wayne streets. When an officer tried to stop the truck, according to court documents, Vanscoy sped away on Virginia Avenue.
The officer activated his emergency lights and siren but the defendant did not stop. Vanscoy turned onto Upper Shore Street where he allegedly ran a stop sign.
Moments later, documents said, he traveled east on Quarry Street and nearly hit two oncoming vehicles.
The chase continued onto South McKean Street and then on Center Avenue, where Vanscoy is accused of again failing to stop at a stop sign and almost hitting another vehicle.
The suspect finally stopped at Center Avenue and McKean Street. Police soon learned his driver's license was suspended.
A review of Vanscoy's driving record, documents said, showed he has 10 prior convictions for driving with a suspended license, police said.
Following the chase, the defendant was arraigned on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police, and summary charges of driving under suspension, driving without valid inspection and a stop sign violation.
A preliminary hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. Oct. 19 before District Judge Pete Shaffer.
