Family recovering after blaze

CONNOQUENESSING — Just hours after escaping from her family’s burning home, matriarch Janet Gongloff returned to survey the damage.

For 29 years, Gongloff lived at the home in the 1200 block of Route 68.

Before, she and her husband, who died in 2010, lived in Pittsburgh and Cranberry Township.

Others living in the house were her son, Robert Gongloff, 50, his 29-year-old girlfriend, Jolene L. Schirra, and his son, Robert Gongloff Jr., 26.

Janet Gongloff said she was sleeping when the fire started. She heard grandson Robert Gongloff Jr. yell for the family to get out of the house.

“He saved our lives,” Janet Gongloff said.

The fire started in the back bedroom where Robert Gongloff and Schirra stayed.

The elder Robert Gongloff fought the fire with a fire hose in the backyard and kept the flames at bay until firefighters arrived.

He was then flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, where he is recovering from smoke inhalation. He was kept overnight and is expected to be released today.

The home is now charred on the inside, everything burnt black. An insurance adjuster came to the residence Thursday afternoon.

Janet Gongloff said the family is looking at different hotel rates and aren’t sure where they will be living after their ordeal.

“I don’t know where I’m going to stay,” she said.

The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross’ Butler County chapter.

The family’s two dogs and two cats died in the fire.

Officials are investigating the blaze, labeled as suspicious.

Schirra was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for “evaluation,” authorities said. She was reportedly handcuffed and restrained by state troopers.

Connoquenessing Fire Chief Lou Zimmerman was not available for comment Thursday.

The state police crime unit and state police fire marshal are investigating the fire.

Janet Gongloff said there was a sign of hope after the fire.

“There was a picture of Jesus lying in the backyard,” she said. “I think it’s a sign that everything will be all right.”
