Enabling addicts
In the dictionary, the definition of accident is “an unintentional or unexplained happening or event.”
I fail to see how a drug overdose can qualify as an accident. How can heroin accidentally be injected into your veins?
A toddler can endanger himself by dangerous behavior if there is not a responsible adult there to restrain him. Addicts have found their responsible adult in the form of Narcan. As long as they know they will suffer no consequences from overdosing, they see no reason to change their behavior.
I am sure there is a financial loss to the addict as all their money is going in their arm. So who pays for this life-saving drug? We the taxpayer.
If you think overdosing is going to cause these addicts to stop shooting up, think again. The man found dead behind the pizza shop in Butler had been saved with Narcan earlier that month. He was not as lucky the second time.
We are just enabling these people by reassuring them — shoot up, we will be there to save you with Narcan.
There are people who cannot afford life-saving medicine for an illness that they have through no fault of their own, but we must save the addict.
