$100,000 effort revamps playground in city

Children and families in the Institute Hill neighborhood of Butler now have a newly renovated playground to use.

The Rotary Club of Butler organized the $100,000 renovation project, which took several months to complete.

It included the construction of a pavilion with picnic tables and benches, new fencing, playground equipment, handicap parking and a sidewalk made up of inscribed bricks.

A ribbon cutting on the project was held Saturday.

“This started as a project to build a small shelter at the playground,” said Dale Pinkerton, president of the club.

But plans continued to expand once members decided the playground was not in the best condition.

Rotary members went door-to-door in the neighborhood in September selling $75 bricks to help raise funds. The club also had two golf outings and received donations from multiple companies and individuals.

Some of the larger donations included $15,000 from the Logan Trust Fund; $10,000 from the Eleanor and John Wise Trust Fund; $5,000 from Peoples TWP and $20,000 from XTO Energy.

“This was a joint effort of hundreds of people,” Pinkerton said.
