Dr. Petronio F. Zalamea M.D.

Dr. Petronio F. Zalamea M.D., 82, of Ellwood City passed away Monday at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

Dr. Zalamea was born on July 15, 1933, in Pagsanjan Laguna, Philippines, to the late Florencio and Juanita Fernandez Zalamea.

Dr. Zalamea graduated from the Far Eastern University College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines, with a medical degree.

He moved to the United States in 1961 and served his pediatrics internship and residency at Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

In 1970, he moved to Ellwood City and opened his own family medicine and pediatrics practice, first located on Lawrence Avenue and later moved to Evans Drive.

He closed his private practice in 1992 to serve as a Locum Tenens in several states before retiring in 2010. He was known as “Dr. Pete” in the community and was noted for his compassion in making house calls to those in need.

A member of the Holy Redeemer Parish in Ellwood City, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and taxidermy.

Dr. Pete is survived by his wife, Socorro (Corinne) Dejelo Zalamea, R.N., who he married Jan. 25, 1964; his son, Petronio D. Zalamea of Millstone, N.J.; his two daughters, Nita Longo and Stephanie Zalamea, both of Arlington, Mass.; his son, Rick (Angela) Zalamea of Rootstown, Ohio; his four grandchildren, Julia Longo and Elena Longo and Bryan Zalamea and Daniel Zalamea; and his two sisters, Corona Zalamea-Lina, 94, of Victoria Laguna, Philippines, and Corazon Zalamea-Villaraza, 92, of Legaspi City, Philippines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florencio and Juanita; his brother, Francisco “Frank” Zalamea; and his sisters, Adoracion Zalamea-Pizarro and Petronila Velasco.

ZALAMEA — Visitation for Dr. Petronio F. Zalamea M.D., who died Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Samuel Teolis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 309 Spring Ave., Ellwood City.A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Redeemer Church with the Rev. Zachary Galiyas officiating. Entombment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery.Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9:20 a.m. Friday.The family requests you view the obituary and sign the guest book at www.teolisfuneralhome.com.
