Slippery Rock man dies in Mercer County crash

FINDLEY TWP, Mercer County — A Slippery Rock man was killed Friday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Route 258.

Nicholas R. Furman, 21, died after the Ford Escape he was a passenger in crashed at 9:40 a.m., according to state police in Mercer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, Fallon N. Dovidio, 20, of Mercer, reportedly suffered severe head injuries and was flown to a hospital by medical helicopter.

An infant was in a car seat in the backseat of the vehicle.

The conditions of Dovidio and the infant were not available.

Police said Dovidio lost control of the southbound vehicle about a mile south of Thompson Road and it began to spin. The SUV slid about 165 feet before hitting a west side embankment and a group of trees, police said. The vehicle came to rest on the driver's side facing south.

Furman was wearing a seat belt but the air bag did not deploy, police said.

The East End Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ambulance assisted at the scene as did the sheriff departments from Allegheny and Mercer counties.

Officers still are investigating the cause of the accident.
