Cardinals, Leake agree on contractST. LOUIS — Right-hander Mike Leake and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract, a move the Cardinals hopes boosts their chances to win a fourth straight NL Central title.Leake gets $12 million next year, $15 million in 2017, $17 million in 2018, $16 million in 2019 and $15 million in 2020. The deal includes an $18 million mutual option for 2021 with a $5 million buyout. Leake also receives a full no-trade provision.
AP names McCaffrey Player of YearStanford running back Christian McCaffrey is The Associated Press college football player of the year, becoming the first non-Heisman Trophy winner to earn the honor in six years.McCaffrey was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Derrick Henry, but received 29 of 60 votes from the AP Top 25 media panel to edge the Alabama running back.Henry received 16 votes and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was third with 11. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield each received two votes.
10 Carolina Panthers joining Pro BowlNEW YORK — The Carolina Panthers lead the NFL with 10 players selected for the Pro Bowl.The Panthers are two wins away from a perfect regular season. Quarterback Cam Newton was picked Tuesday for the third time. Five of his teammates were first-time selections, including cornerback Josh Norman and linebacker Thomas Davis.Seattle, Arizona and New England each had seven players selected, and Cincinnati had five players picked.Raiders safety Charles Woodson, who announced on Monday that he will retire after the season, was selected for the ninth time.Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin will serve as alumni team captains for their Pro Bowl teams. The draft will be on Jan. 27.The Pro Bowl will be held on Jan. 31 in Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Bulls lose Noah to shoulder sprainCHICAGO — Bulls center Joakim Noah will miss at least two weeks because of a sprained left shoulder.Noah exited Monday's loss to the Brooklyn Nets in the third quarter.He was on defense when Brooklyn's Andrea Bargnani, after jumping, came down hard on Noah's left arm, bending it back awkwardly.The Bulls (15-11) have dropped three straight.
Hawaii basketball placed on probationHONOLULU — The University of Hawaii men's basketball team was put on three years of probation Tuesday by the NCAA after an investigation found former coach Gib Arnold violated ethical conduct rules and provided false or misleading information.As a result, Hawaii will lose two scholarships during the next two seasons, leaving it with 11, and cannot play in postseason games during the 2016-2017 academic year. The NCAA approved a $10,000 fine that the university previously imposed on itself. Hawaii also must pay a penalty equaling 1 percent of the basketball program's budget over the previous three years.
