Man found in woods faces drug charges

JACKSON TWP — Police allege a 29-year-old man believed he was in West Virginia, but he really was confused, potentially high on crystal meth and wandering around the woods of Jackson Township.

Officers found Matthew R. Nichols, 29, of Looneyville, W.Va. in a wooded area near Emma Lane on Oct. 2 after receiving reports of a suspicious man in the area.

When questioned, Nichols told officers that he believed he was on his family’s property just off Route 36 in Spencer, W.Va., according to court documents.

Nichols on Tuesday was extradited by township police back to Butler County Prison on drug charges stemming from the incident.

Police said Nichols acted strangely and had slurred speech when they found him. He was also attempting to drink out of a thermos that had pieces of a broken glass liner floating in it.

Police took Nichols into custody because for safety concerns. At that time, police said Nichols was combative and not cooperative.

While sitting on a bench, Nichols was sweating profusely and began “flopping around” and ended up on the floor, police said. EMS responded and determined he was likely under the influence of a stimulant type drug.

Police found an empty wax stamp bag on the ground near the driver’s door of Nichols’ vehicle. There were five other empty stamp bags on the front seat of the vehicle in plain sight, police said.

Three of the stamp bags were marked with a skull and crossbones with the word “overdose” written below it, according to documents. A field test on residue in the bags indicated they contained either methamphetamine or amphetamine, police said.

Nichols was taken to the hospital for treatment of the suspected overdose.

A search warrant was obtained for his vehicle and police found another unmarked stamp bag and 8 grams of crystal meth inside a plastic bottle.

Nichols on Oct. 23 was charged with a felony count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, as well as six counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, and public drunkenness.

Police said Nichols returned home to West Virginia between the time he left the hospital and the time he was charged on Oct. 23.

He was recently arrested in West Virginia, where township police drove to pick him up.
