Jacob J. “Jake” Spowal

Jacob J. “Jake” Spowal, 92, of Zelienople passed away Saturday at the Passavant Retirement Community.

Born July 15, 1923, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Jacob J. Spowal Sr. and Theresa (Staudt) Spowal.

Jake was a member of St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church in Zelienople, where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society since he was 16 years of age.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was self-employed as a building contractor for 42 years.

Jake was also a member of the Zelienople American Legion Post 0474 and the AARP in Mars. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Jake leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 68 years, Dolores A. “Dolly” (Kiselka) Spowal of Zelienople, who he married May 3, 1947; two daughters, Karen (the late Dr. John) McKitrick of Carmel, N.Y., and Janice D. Spowal of Zelienople; his son, Kenneth A. (Bettie) Spowal of Milford, Ohio; three grandchildren, Ryan (Melissa) Spowal, Cory (Jesse) Spowal and Karina (Michael) Linehan; five great-grandchildren, Jack, Julia, Josie, Ollie and Eli; his sister, Margaret (George) Hurka of Pittsburgh; and his dear friends, Jack (the late Margaret) Schessler of Evans City.

SPOWAL — Friends of Jacob J. “Jake” Spowal, who died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 2 W. Beaver St., Zelienople, with the Rev. Michael Roche as celebrant.Jake will be laid to rest at the Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery in Ross Township.If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Jake's honor to the St. Anthony's School Programs, 2718 Custer Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15227, to the McGuire Memorial Home Foundation, P.O.
