Dale Frederick Mershimer
Dale Frederick Mershimer, 86, of Hermitage passed away peacefully Tuesday from complications of congestive heart failure.
He was born Aug. 3, 1929, one of six children born to Charles Lee and Mary Elizabeth Snyder Mershimer. He was raised in Butler County and graduated from Slippery Rock High School.
On Jan. 5, 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he reached the rank of corporal in a heavy tank company, the 14th Infantry Regiment. He served at both Camp Carson and Camp McCoy and was honorably discharged in January of 1950.
He was employed as an insurance agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and later became a carpenter with the D.L. Mershirmer Construction Co. owned by his brother. As a carpenter, he belonged to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 922.
Dale held memberships in the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge 55, and the former German Home in Farrell.
In his earlier years, Dale was a standout basketball player. He enjoyed a good round of golf, hunting and fishing and simply spending time with his family and friends.
His wife, the former Eleanor J. Schlicht, who he married June 9, 1951, passed away unexpectedly April 2, 1978, from injuries in an automobile accident.
He is survived by his daughters, Loreen Mershimer and her spouse, Roberto Mustacchi, of Chicago, and Kate Mershimer and her spouse, Sherry Householder, of Harrisburg; his son, Frederick Mershimer of Brooklyn; his life partner of 25 years, Diane Holzshu; and his two grandchildren, Robert and Caterina Mustacchi.
He is also survived by the son of Dianne Holzshu, Steve Sipos and his spouse, Teena, and his two children, Jordon and Haylee Sipos. He leaves his brother, Paul Mershimer and his wife, Margeurite, of Slippery Rock and Georgia Burns of Freedom, Pa.
In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his two brothers, his twin, Donald, and Charles Mershimer; and his sister, Anna Mershimer.
