Fire destroys Slippery Rock Township trailer home
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — An attempt to thaw frozen water pipes resulted in a fire that destroyed a trailer home Sunday afternoon.
No one was injured.
“Everyone was awful lucky to get out. Those old trailers go up pretty quick,” said Al Taggart, assistant chief at Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department.
By the time the first fire truck arrived at 8887 Orchard Park Lane around 4 p.m., just 12 minutes after the first call to 911, the home was engulfed in flames.
Taggart described the trailer home as an older model worth about $8,000.
He said earlier in the day the water pipes froze and there was an attempt to thaw them with a torpedo heater placed under the trailer.
A 10-year-old girl, who was visiting the occupants, first smelled smoke, he said. And everyone got out safely.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the two renters, identified as Veronica Martin and Charity Ramsey.
In addition to them and the 10-year-old, a 5-month-old child and two adults were visiting and in the house at the time.
Taggart said the occupants have no insurance. The trailer is owned by Richard Lednak of Verona.
Harrisville Fire Department assisted.
