Bernard J. “Barney” Slupe

Bernard J. “Barney” Slupe, 91, of Butler passed away Sunday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born April 8, 1924, in Butler, he was a son of the late Paul and Permilla Spohn Slupe.

He was an inspector at Pullman Standard, retiring in 1982, after more than 20 years of service. He was also a former self-employed painter.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Barney was a founding member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Conference at Saint Conrad Roman Catholic Church, now Saint Fidelis Church, and was treasurer there for 54 years until he retired in 2007.

He was a member of the Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church.

He was also a member of the VFW Post 249 of Butler, the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Roman Catholic Men's Club and the St. Fidelis Men's Club.

He is survived by two sons, Dennis Slupe and his wife, Lisa, of Butler and Douglas Slupe of Butler; four daughters, Denise Konieczny and her husband, Michael, of Butler, Darlene Slupe and her friend, Harold Noland, of Butler, Debra Maire of Butler and Doreen Slupe of Butler; three brothers, Robert Slupe and his wife, Phyllis, of Butler, James “Bud” Slupe of Butler and Thomas Slupe of Butler; one sister, Ruth Shorts of Grove City; and his friend and caregiver, Patricia Henricks.

In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Steighner Slupe, who he married in September 1945 and who passed away Sept. 10, 1978; his daughter, Deanna Slupe, who passed away March 11, 1987; three brothers, Carl Slupe, Paul Slupe and Donald Slupe; and one sister, Janice “Sis” Musk.

SLUPE — Friends of Bernard J. “Barney” Slupe, who died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian. Burial will take place at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Herman.The Prayer Group of St. Fidelis Parish will meet at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Tuesday.The family requests memorial donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 146 N.
