Saxonburg says goodbye to mayor
SAXONBURG — Dozens of mourners lined Main Street Saxonburg this morning to say goodbye to the borough's popular mayor.
Pam Bauman, 67, died Feb. 18 an unspecified type of cancer.
Bauman was elected mayor in 2013. Before that she served on the borough council. She also owned Mimi's Memories Antiques and Gifts on Main Street.
Raised in New York, she and her husband, Bob, owned Bauman Bus Co. for many years before retiring.
Bauman was involved in the Saxonburg Area Business Association, the GFWC Saxonburg District Woman's Club and other community groups.
Longtime friend District Judge Sue Haggerty said Bauman was a good cook, saying few people knew she had her own cookbook and was a great entertainer and organizer.
In 2014, Bauman set up a wedding chapel in a former police dispatch room in the borough building to make weddings she officiates more romantic.
“She loved doing weddings,” Haggerty said.
Judy Ferree, owner of the Hotel Saxonburg, met Bauman about five and a half years ago — around the same time she bought the hotel and Bauman bought her business. They went on to form Discover Saxonburg, which was designed to promote businesses in the borough together. Discover Saxonburg now is a committee under the Saxonburg Area Business Association.
Borough Councilman Josh Novotny, who owns Novotny's Pizza and is vice president of the Saxonburg Area Business Association, joined council at the same time Bauman became mayor.“She did a terrific job as mayor. She was very hands on,” Novotny said.He said the way Bauman did things, both as mayor and as a business owner, made it clear how she felt about the borough.“You can tell she loved Saxonburg,” Novotny said.
