Planet Fitness planned

Developer eyes Cranberry site

CRANBERRY TWP — A developer wants to build a Planet Fitness franchise in the township this year.

The township planning advisory commission on Monday heard a presentation on the proposal.

The 26,000-square-foot, two-story building is proposed for a vacant 3.5 acres at 47 Dutilh Road, adjacent to an office building constructed by the same developer, Dutilh Property Associates.

The developer originally planned to build two office buildings there, but changed plans, said Ron Henshaw, township director of planning and development services.

Demographic research convinced the company that Cranberry would be a good place to build, said architect Mike Twiss.

The company expects the facility to draw people in.

“It’s a destination-type place,” he said of the fitness center that will be open 24 hours a day.

If approved by the township, the developer wants to get construction started immediately, Twiss said.

The planning commission next Monday can vote to recommend the conditional use application to the township supervisors for approval.

A franchise opened last year on New Castle Road in Butler Township.

Planet Fitness, based in New Hampshire, has more than 1,000 locations in North America, according to its website.
