L. Andrew “Andy” Stoughton Sr.

L. Andrew “Andy” Stoughton Sr., 90, of Harrisville passed away at 4 a.m. Tuesday at Orchard Manor in Grove City following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, to Floyd Burkett Stoughton Sr. and Margaret Kaiser Stoughton. He married R. Valjean “Jean” Kurten on May 24, 1947. She preceded him in death Nov. 4, 2014.

He retired Dec. 31, 1985, as a general foreman and metallurgist in the strip department of the Titanium Metals Corp. of America (TIMET) in Toronto, Ohio.

While working as a metallurgist for the Allegheny Ludlum Corp. in Leechburg, Pa., he served with the team that developed the titanium alloy used in the Mercury Spacecraft and in the U2 spy plane.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran in the Pacific Theatre on the USS LST 720, serving as a pharmacist mate.

His interests included photography, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Harrisville American Legion Post 852, and he attended the Harrisville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, L. Andrew Stoughton Jr. and his wife, Darla, of Harrisville, and Donald J. Stoughton of Wellsburg, W.Va.; five grandchildren, L. Andrew Stoughton III and his wife, Amy, Maggie E. Stoughton and her husband, Dave Drogowski, Rebecca Brown, Aaron Carey and Debbie Semko and her husband, Jeff; and seven great-grandchildren, Kellan Andrew, Eve Eileen, Cole Lee, Nicholas Evan, Paige Marie and her husband, Ben, Alyssa Marie and Donavone Andrew.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Mark A. Stoughton; and four brothers.

STOUGHTON — Friends of L. Andrew “Andy” Stoughton Sr., who died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Funeral services will be with the Rev. Jeff Canter, pastor of the Harrisville United Methodist Church, presiding. Interment will be at the Greenwood Memorial Park in New Kensington, Pa.Memorial contributions may be directed to the local charity of the giver's choice.
