Helen E. “Mumsy” Sheakley
Helen E. “Mumsy” Sheakley of Butler passed away Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
She was born in London, England, to the late Thomas Richard Gordge and Emily E. (Souster) Gordge.
Mrs. Sheakley worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Army in England, where she sang to the troops. She served as a civilian international liaison between England, Paris and France.
Helen graduated from Worthington Girls School in London, England, and Kensington University.
Mrs. Sheakley was a singer and actress for the BBC Radio Show “Monday Night at Eight” and sang at many clubs throughout the area. She lived in eight countries and sang in all of them. Mrs. Sheakley was a Past Royal Matron of the Amaranth. She enjoyed music, flowers and entertaining.
She is survived by two daughters, Debra (Gregor) Schurko of Pittsburgh and Vickie (Mark) White of Butler; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Shepherd and Chase Hemphill; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Avery; one brother, George Gordge of London, England; one sister, Elsie Simons of Perth, Australia; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the world.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Quay Sheakley, who she married in 1945 and who passed away in 1994; one son, Dennis L. Sheakley; one daughter, Sandra Lee; four brothers, Thomas, Frank, Leslie and David Gordge; and three sisters, Pam, Joan and Rose.
