Clyde Arthur Braun Sr.

Clyde Arthur Braun Sr., 96, of Butler died Thursday morning at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 13, 1919, he was a son of the late Joseph Braun and Inez (Gray) Braun.

Clyde's community involvement began with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts programs in Butler. In 1982, he received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor award given to adults by the local scouting council. He also was a member of the Diocesan Catholic Committee on scouting and had served on the staff at Camp Henry Kaufman.

Clyde was active with the community Crime Watch program, which he helped organize in the early 1980s. His other involvements include the Cancer Association and the American Red Cross.

Clyde was a member of and served as an officer with the Holy Name Society, worked with St. Vincent DePaul Society, served on the Butler Catholic School Board, both as a member and president, and served several terms on St. Peter's Church Council and worked on council social activities.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church, St. Peter's Church Choir and also of the tour choir at St. Paul's. In addition, Clyde was a St. Peter's representative to the Butler Interfaith Council, he wrote the “Front Page” commentary for the Sunday Bulletin and represented St. Peter's at the Cathedral in Pittsburgh to receive the holy oils, used during holy week and throughout the year.

Following his retirement from the Armco Steel plant in 1982, he traveled to India to assist with a steel plant operation. While there, he was blessed by Mother Teresa, during a chance encounter at the airport.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in Hawaii, following Pearl Harbor.

Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Thelma Mae (Dressel), who he married Oct. 21, 1946; three sons, Clyde A. (Cynthia) Braun Jr. of Markleysburg, Pa., Jeffrey A. (Lori) Braun of Butler and Eric A. (Nancy) Braun of Butler; three daughters, Philomena G. (Terry) Wasko of Lynchburg, Va., Jennifer A. Monaco of Butler and Alyssa C. (Dennis) Trivilino of Ellwood City; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Gerri Dressel of Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria E. Braun; two grandchildren, Joey and Amanda; and three brothers, Alfred, John and Paul Braun.

BRAUN — Friends of Clyde Arthur Braun Sr., who died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, will be received from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Parish Cemetery.The Womens Council of St. Peter will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church to recite the rosary.
