Carson will speak at Grove City commencement
GROVE CITY — Former Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson has stepped in at the last minute as the keynote speaker at Grove City College’s commencement Saturday morning.
Carson replaces conservative author William J. Bennet, who was scheduled to speak but had to decline unexpectedly, the college said in a news release.
College President Paul McNulty said Carson will deliver an address titled “The Power of Knowledge.”
“Dr. Carson’s story of his journey from extreme poverty to becoming one of America’s leading physicians will certainly inspire our students,” McNulty said.
McNulty said the college “deeply appreciates” Carson, a neurosurgeon and former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, accepting the engagement on short notice.
Carson served on the President’s Council on Bioethics under President George W. Bush, and in 2001 was named as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists by CNN and Time Magazine.
Commencement is 10 a.m. at the college’s Quad between Harbison Chapel and Crawford Hall. In case of rain, the ceremony will be in the Arena of the Physical Learning Center, and only advance ticket holders will be admitted.
Carson will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the college.
