ZELIENOPLE — T.J. Wanamaker and his school’s efforts to help his brother proved fruitful.

T.J., a third-grade student at Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School, brought the idea for this month’s CVE Cares Project to help those with congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG).

The project raised $1,645 Monday and Tuesday, the most raised for the school’s Cares projects this year.

“It’s just amazing how much we got in two days,” T.J. said.

His 4-year-old brother Madon has the disease. He suffers from high liver enzymes, bleeding and clotting disorders, developmental delays and seizures.

Madon also takes medicine for his kidneys to prevent kidney stones, has his cholesterol checked and has his heart monitored.

CDG is a group of rare inherited metabolic disorders that affect glycosylation, which is critical to normal organ development throughout the body, particularly the nervous system. CDG only started to be recognized clinically in the 1980s.
