Mary Jane Helm Shirey
Mary Jane Helm Shirey passed away peacefully Thursday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Butler.
She was born Sept. 26, 1929, to Merle Weir Helm and Margaret Louella Hoover.
She married Linton Duane “Bus” Shirey Sr. on May 26, 1949. They owned and operated Shirey's Corn and Produce in Brady Township until 1975 and continued to raise and harvest pumpkins on their farm up to the 1990s. On Sept. 29, 2001, Duane Shirey passed away.
She also worked as a caretaker for Allegheny Valley schools in Butler County.
In addition, she was a member of the West Liberty Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and embroidery.
She is survived by five sons, Linton Duane Shirey Jr. and his wife, Dara, of North Carolina, Harold “Harry” Merle Shirey of Slippery Rock, David Wayne Shirey and his wife, Elizabeth, of Slippery Rock, James Gale Shirey of Charleroi, and Stephen Chas Shirey and his wife, Denise, of Slippery Rock.
She also is survived by three daughters, Katherine “Kathi” Louella Hogg and her husband, Thomas, of Slippery Rock, Susan May Bonner of Vista, Calif., and Linda Christine Shaffer of Worthington.
Mary is preceded in death by her sister, Donna Lee Horm, and her brother, Harold Merle Helm.
SHIREY — Visitation for Mary Jane Helm Shirey, who died Thursday, April 28, 2016, will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home, Slippery Rock, 421 New Castle St.Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.Officiating the service will be the Rev. Nelson Thayer of the West Liberty United Methodist Church.Interment will be at the Sligo Cemetery, Clarion County.Memorial contributions may be given to Alzheimer's Research.
