Woman dies of injuries from morning collision

An 84-year-old woman whose car collided with a one-ton dump truck in Slippery Rock Township this morning has died.

Edith E. Young of Slippery Rock was pronounced dead a little less than two hours after the 8:15 a.m. collision at Harmony Road and Franklin Road, also known as Route 108.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

Authorities believe Young was driving her Oldsmobile 88 north on Harmony Road, and she failed to yield at a stop sign while attempting to cross Franklin Road.

Aaron R. Adams, 25, of Polk, Venango County was driving the truck owned by a landscaping company, west on Franklin Road.

The truck, which was pulling a skid loader, struck the passenger's side of Young's car, police said.

The car ended 70 feet from the point of impact, police said.

Adams had suspected minor injuries and denied treatment, police said.

A passenger in the truck, Hunter D. Exley, 17, of Frankin, Venango, also was injured and he was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center.

Young was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh where she was pronounced dead.

Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department assisted police and set up a landing zone for helicopter in a field at the crash scene, about one-half mile from the Slippery Rock University football stadium.
