Norma Dee Brydon

Norma Dee Brydon, age 85, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Slippery Rock, passed away Saturday at her home in Melbourne.

She was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Slippery Rock Borough, to Ulysses DeWight “Mack” McCandless and Beulah Roberta Buxton McCandless. She married John Harold Brydon Dec. 25, 1952; he preceded her in death May 28, 2011.

Norma Dee graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1948 and received her nurse's certification at Butler Hospital Nursing School. She went on to work as a nurse in Philadelphia at the Veterans Affairs Hospital and later as a private-duty nurse at the University of Pennsylvania. She last worked as a nurse in the infirmary in North Hall at Slippery Rock University. She was a member of Butler Nurses Association.

She was a devoted homemaker, a great helpmate to her husband, Judge John Brydon, who presided in Butler County and was passionate about community development, particularly in areas of education and girls' sports. She was an advocate for developing girls' sports programming in the Slippery Rock School District and helped organize the first high school girls basketball and track team for girls. She coached girls softball. Norma Dee helped organize and was a former president of the Slippery Rock School District PTA.

She loved playing golf and was a former member of both the Slippery Rock Women's Golf League and Slippery Rock Women's Club. She was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.

Survivors include two daughters, Karin A. Lytle of Hagerstown, Md., and Vonnie S. Brydon of Melbourne, Fla.; her son, Harold R. Brydon and his wife, Susan, of Butler; her sister, Carol W. Harlin of LaGrange, Ga.; her brother, James D. “Jim” McCandless and his wife, Gina, of The Villages, Fla.; and four grandchildren, John C. and Andrew R. Lytle and John H. and Michaela S. Brydon.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and her brother-in-law, Chaplain Donald J. Harlin, retired major general.

The family would also like to acknowledge special caretakers, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Stacy and Alex.

BRYDON — The family of Norma Dee Brydon, who died Saturday, June 4, 2016, will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim McCandless, brother of Norma Dee, presiding.Interment will be at Slippery Rock Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alzfdn.org, or Health First Hospice, 1900 Dairy Road, Melbourne, FL 32904.
