[naviga:h3]Tour de France champ pulls out[/naviga:h3]

ARCALIS, Andorra — Two-time champion Alberto Contador has pulled out of the Tour de France during the ninth stage due to a fever.

Slightly more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the end of the stage, the Spaniard stopped at the side of the road, hopped off his bike and got into the passenger seat of his team car.

Contador crashed in each of the opening stages and had lost time on the other overall favorites.

He was in 20th position at the end of Saturday’s eighth stage, 3 minutes, 12 seconds behind leader Chris Froome.

[naviga:h3]Former Cal gridders receive probation[/naviga:h3]

WASHINGTON — Two former football players for a state university in Western Pennsylvania have been sentenced to probation in an off-campus beating in 2014.

Twenty-year-old D’Andre Dunkley and 22-year-old Shelby Wilkerson each pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor simple assault charge and were sentenced to 18 months’ probation. Other charges, including aggravated assault and conspiracy, were dropped.

They were among six California University of Pennsylvania players charged following an October 2014 beating outside a restaurant that left 30-year-old Lewis Campbell in intensive care with severe brain trauma.

Twenty-four-year-old Corey Ford pleaded no contest to aggravated assault last month. Charges against 22-year-old James Williamson were dismissed. Cases against 22-year-old Jonathan Barlow and 21-year-old Rodney Gillin are pending.
