Man allegedly assaulted officer

A suspected shoplifter was arrested after he allegedly attacked a Butler police officer.

Orion A. Kobet, 37, of Butler Township is charged with punching Patrolman Myles Bizub, who fired his Taser two times at the suspect while making the arrest Tuesday evening outside the E-Z Stop convenience store on North Main Street

Bizub was punched in the left ear but he was not injured, police said.

Kobet is being held in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Police were called to the store about 5:30 p.m. after Kobet reportedly stole a Bic lighter with the Pittsburgh Steelers logo on it.

Bizub spotted the suspect standing in the parking lot. But when the officer approached him, the defendant took an “aggressive martial arts style stance,”according to court documents.

Moments later, he charged the officer.

Bizub deployed his Taser but it was not enough to stop the suspect. Kobet got in a punch. The officer, in turn, shot his Taser again, police said. This time the defendant fell to the ground.

Still, Kobet struggled with the officer. The store clerk moved in to help Bizub, who eventually was able to place the suspect in handcuffs. He was searched and found with the stolen lighter

Kobet was placed in the prison and arraigned Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and retail theft.
