Police hunt fraud suspect after failed chase

CRANBERRY TWP — A fraud suspect is still on the run after he eluded pursuing police in a rental vehicle on Route 228.

The pursuit abruptly ended about 9:25 p.m. Wednesday moments after an unsuspecting motorist traveled through an intersection and collided with one of two police cars that was trying to stop the suspect’s Dodge Durango.

No one was injured, township police said.

Neighboring police a short time later found the black Dodge, abandoned near a restaurant in Adams Township. There was no sign of the suspect or the woman who with him.

Sgt. Chuck Mascellino said this morning that police have no suspects.

Police were called to the hhgregg store at the Cranberry Commons shopping plaza on Route 228 for a credit card fraud case.

An officer confronted the suspect, described as a black male, about 6 feet tall with tattoos on his neck and both arms, in the store parking lot. Nearby, police said, was a light-skinned black female who was with the suspect.

The couple got into the Dodge Durango and took off east on Route 228.

By then another Cranberry officer arrived and started after the suspect’s vehicle. Both patrol cars had their emergency lights and sirens on.

The first cruiser made it through the intersection at Route 228 and Franklin Road. But the second one didn’t. A Ford Mustang collided with the police car.

Police did not immediately identity the driver of the Ford or the officer.

“Everyone was checked out,” Mascellino said, “and they were OK.”

The lead officer in the pursuit lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle.

Police from Adams and Jackson townships, and Evans City-Seven Fields Regional assisted in the search.

The Dodge was found at a vacant home for sale on West Vanderbilt Road in Adams Township near the Springfield Grille.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-776-5180, or 911.
